Pastors frequently say how difficult it is to encourage members of their congregation to move on in their walk with the Lord. Perhaps many people are happy to come Sunday by Sunday and sit in the pews – just so long as they don’t have to do anything. Maybe they regard the church as a kind of social club.
Jesus called His disciples to follow Him, and following someone implies movement. If Simon, James and John had stayed in their fishing boats they would have learned nothing and Jesus would have had to look for others willing to walk with Him.
Are many of us still in the same place, spiritually, as we were when we first became Christians? Are we still wanting ‘milk’ from our pastors, or have we reached the stage of being able to take the ‘strong meat’ of spiritual challenges? How much have we grown and matured as disciples?
Jesus waits patiently for us to hear His call – but then He expects us to follow.
Prayer: Thank You, Father, that You’re patient and loving with me, but please help me not to become complacent. I want to be obedient to follow You wherever You lead me. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
And He said to them, “Come after Me as disciples, follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.”
Matthew 4: 19, Amp.
