It’s hard to believe, but it even got cold in Florida this winter as temperatures dropped well below freezing. This was bad news for the 8000 acres of strawberry farms that are located around Plant City – the nearest town to Ellel USA – which has the title, ‘Winter Strawberry Capital of the World’! To protect this delicious fruit, local farmers stayed awake through the long cold nights, irrigating their fields so that the fruit would be insulated by the ice and not get frost damage. Well, when you combine this extra irrigation with being in the middle of the dry season, it meant that the water-table dropped by 35 feet in just 5 days! The result of this was that many residential wells (including our own) ran dry.
We made a call to the local water authority to report what had happened and they sent someone out to assess the situation. The bottom line was that the well in our backyard was not deep enough – we would need to go deeper. To have this work done was going to be a huge job and we would be waiting about 3 weeks without any water. Thankfully we live near the Ellel property, and we were able to go there to fill buckets and use the shower. Also, a few days into our water shortage, the County delivered 72 gallons of drinking water for us to use.
This alternative supply of water made me think about our ‘spiritual wells’. Do you ever feel you are running dry on the inside? Perhaps you don’t even notice your own well has run dry because you are so busy using alternative sources of ‘water’ to sustain you. Maybe you go to other people and draw from their ‘well’ or maybe you look for people to bring ‘water’ to you. The problem is that all of these other sources run out. It might seem great at first but it doesn’t last and then we need to find another source.
God’s heart is that we will allow Him to dig deeper in our hearts so that we can drink from His water – water that will never run out. He wants to be that source for us and to be our wellspring of life. Why don’t you ask Him today to be that source and allow Him to dig deeper in your life.
Jesus replied, “Anyone who drinks this water will soon become thirsty again. But those who drink the water I give will never be thirsty again. It becomes a fresh, bubbling spring within them, giving them eternal life.”
