Tender Hearts, Humble Minds

Some of us think that it is our right to be served in many ways and complain if we don’t get the satisfaction of service that we think we should have. Yet our Master was a servant to all. I know I often have just one thing on my mind, (what I am about to do or the things on my ‘to do’ list for the day). But I forget that those I meet that might be stressed, sick, sad or lonely. Just a little interest, kindness and concern for them would really warm their hearts and lift their spirits, especially during this season of the year. It would be like the sun coming out on a dull, rainy morning and lighting up all the grass, trees and houses, making everything look fresh and new.

In the Bible it says, ‘when others are happy, be happy with them. If they are sad share their sorrow’ (Romans 12:15). So maybe I could slow down a little and take a moment to listen to others. Jesus went about doing good, giving hope to all He met and having compassion for those in need. When we share His love and compassion with others they can know there is something special in what we do because we love the Lord. We can preach the Gospel in this way, even without words.

There’s a lovely programme on the television where they get a volunteer, who’s a millionaire, to live and work in a poor community, disguised as someone who has nothing. The millionaire stays there for a few months and gets to know people, finds someone who has a special need and at the end suddenly presents that person with a financial gift to help make a dream come true. It’s lovely to see the surprise and joy on the faces of both the receiver and the giver. It reminds me of how Jesus ‘laid aside his mighty power and glory, taking the disguise of a slave’ (Philippians 2:7).

Prayer: Lord, Help us to have ‘servant hearts’ like Yours. May we be happy to do the humble things You ask of us. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
