Skyscrapers have been built over many centuries; in fact I would say that the first one ever built is recorded in the Bible when men built the tower of Babel. I’m not sure how tall it was but it brought a great concern in the heavens. God confused the language of the builders.
It never ceases to amaze me, how such tall habitable buildings can remain standing tall and strong in the sky. How can so much weight be balanced?
I spent some time reading more about skyscrapers and realised that tall skyscrapers are so heavy they must be built on a sturdier foundation than would be required for shorter, lighter buildings. A firm foundation has got everything to do with a good tall building or a skyscraper.
Jesus gave a parable about a wise and foolish builder and the vulnerability that’s there when the foundations in our lives are not good. Whatever foundations we build upon will determine what will happen when the storms come.
Not only should our foundations be strong because of the storms and torrents of life but also every man’s work will be tested. How are your works? How do you live your life? Are you obedient to God’s will? Does your life reflect Jesus’ character?
I learned about so many things that can affect the foundations of a building; like trees, the type of soil, proximity of drains, wind speed, building regulations, the height of the building and the ground itself. Think about the things that hinder you from building on a good foundation.
When foundations are built on a rock the building is firm and strong. It takes a lot of work to dig through the rock but it’s worth the work when we go through the test later on.
The foundation we lay in our lives will be tested by fire. Have you laid the foundation on the rock (Jesus) or on wood hay or straw (the worldly things)?
Prayer: Lord, there are many foundations that I can build on, but today I choose to make You my foundation, my rock and my strength. Help me to get rid of the things in my life that hinder me from building on You. I choose You as my foundation. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
"If any man builds on this foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay or straw, his work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each man's work."
