How Great is Our God

In a recent television programme Professor Stephen Hawkins, a well known British scientist and astrophysicist, spoke that he had it all worked out – the beginning, the continuation and the end of the world, but he admitted that he didn’t know why we were here, or whether it was by chance or not.

What he doesn’t know is we are the pinnacle of God’s creation, made in His image, created to be in relationship with Him. He can’t explain the joy, peace and liberty of a human being, who has been reconciled to His Maker and has had a glimpse of His love and glory - a glory that is displayed in universe after universe and yet is seen in the beauty of a single snowflake.

Professor Hawkins believes that in the universe, ‘imperfections’ are catalysts for change, causing stunning new sequences to take place. It reminded me that God can use an imperfection in us to change and grow something new and beautiful in our lives, that otherwise would never have taken place. The Lord said to the Apostle Paul, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my strength is made perfect in weakness’(2 Corinthians 12:9).

I know that in the hands of the enemy imperfection can lead to destruction, weakness and death, but in the hands of the Lord it can be transformed into something pure and good.

The Bible says that one day there will be a new heaven and a new earth, so it will never disappear down any ‘black holes’. There will be no need for the sun because Jesus will be the light in the midst of the city of God (Revelation 21:1). We will spend eternity worshipping our great God, aware of His beauty and holiness that outshines a thousand glittering universes that may pass before our eyes. What can we say to such things? What else can we do but fall before our great God and worship only Him with all our hearts?

"Lord we have seen the rising sun awakening the early dawn,

And we’re rising up to give you praise.

Lord we have seen the stars and the moon, seen how they shine,

How they shine for you, and you’re calling us to do the same.

So we rise up with a song, and we’re giving you our lives.

We’ll shine like the stars in the universe, holding out the truth in the darkest place,

We’ll be living for your glory Jesus, we’ll be living for your glory" (Matt Redman).

Prayer: Lord, we live to bless You for creating us to live on this beautiful earth and for giving us eternal life in Jesus Christ. Amen.
