On a very ordinary day 2000 years ago the extraordinary happened. The beauty, majesty, and wonder that is the Light of the World burst into the dark world of mankind when our Lord Jesus Christ was born. The Holy Scriptures declare that He is the `Light that lights every man` (John 1:9) Such was His might and majesty, that even as a baby, He banished forever Satan`s plans of locking God`s creation into a prison of darkness. Without Jesus we would know nothing but hopelessness and despair.
But God wanted us to know how much He, our creator, loves us. He wanted us to know something of His manifest presence and He wanted us to share in all that He has for us - so He came to deliver us from evil and the clutches of sin, translating us into the kingdom of His dear Son (Colossians 1:13).
In the natural order of creation plants need the light of the sun to prosper - without it they are stunted in growth, remain closed and do not reach their full potential. So, too, we humans need the warmth and light of the sun. It is crucial to our well-being. Oh but how much more we need the light of the `Son of God` to enable us to reach our full potential, fulfilling the destiny that God has planned for us.
God has also given to us His precious Holy Word, the Bible, to guide us to Himself. Little do we realise it, but every time we read the Bible, we handle, absorb and digest the gold of eternal life entrusted to us by the Lord of Life himself, tasting of the world to come. For, as we believe, it is by those `great and precious promises` that we become `partakers of the divine nature` (2 Peter 1:4).
These same Scriptures also speak of another imminent day when once again the Light of the World will personally burst into the ordinariness of daily life - but this time as King of kings. We know this will happen because Jesus came the first time according to the Scriptures. Winter is almost over and the tyrannical reign of evil is fast drawing to a close, and we eagerly await the Second Coming of Jesus!
In this Advent Season (before His Second Coming), wise men still seek Him. This Light which lights every man governs our destiny, and guards our footsteps. How wonderfully comforting it is to know that none can pluck us from His hand. Never will man be alone or without hope. Maranatha!
Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for shining Your glorious light into our dark lives and for making us Your own. Help us to give You Your rightful place in our lives every day that You might find us ready when You come again, in Jesus` name. Amen.
"The True Light which lights every man who comes into the world."
John 1:9, NKJV
