To our great delight our younger daughter has recently become engaged, and this seed is about the thoughts she’s had about what becoming engaged means and how it relates to our lives in Christ.
She emailed me with her thoughts about having agreed to share her life with someone who adores her, someone who is prepared to make sacrifices for her, and who offers her love, companionship, and security. She wrote of the joy and peace this brings to her spirit. She spoke of the engagement as a time of getting to know her intended husband better, making plans for their future together, and how she sees her engagement ring as a sign of the promise of the blessings to come with marriage.
We can draw a parallel with her happy thoughts and our own relationship with Jesus Christ. When we invite Jesus to be the Lord of our lives He gives us the Holy Spirit; a wonderful gift which marks us as separate from the world, and which is a guarantee or promise of things to come. We belong to Him as our promised Bridegroom, and during our time on earth it’s up to us to get to know Him better by spending time with Him. He loves us so much that He made the ultimate sacrifice for us, and it should be our joy and delight to spend time with Him.
These thoughts are all the more precious because the Greek word in this passage for guarantee or promise is ‘arrhabon’, and this is the word used in modern Greek to mean engagement ring! So our Bridegroom has indeed given us an ‘engagement ring’, the most beautiful one, and far more valuable than any diamonds and gold, to say that we are pledged to Him for eternity. Hallelujah!
Prayer: Lord Jesus, Thank You so much for loving me so deeply that You laid down everything for me, and for giving me such a wonderful pledge of Your Spirit. The thought of spending eternity with You is amazing and I pray that You will help me to spend our engagement getting to know You better, as You already know me. I love You, Jesus, and thank You for everything You have done for me. Amen.
"In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also having believed you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, to the praise of His glory."
